With summer in full swing, we’ve excitedly moved into smallmouth fishing. If you haven’t caught a smallmouth bass on the fly, you are definitely missing out. Smallmouth can be a really eager and aggressive fish especially with a topwater fly, and they’ll put up an incredible fight no matter their size. Read on for a few quick tips on gearing up for summer fly fishing adventures.
The Flies
For topwater, try a Boogle Bug (chartreuse has been our go-to) or a Stealth Bomber. Upon casting, allow the fly to sit on the water’s surface for longer than you think. Patience is your friend, and recasting too soon may spook a potential fish.
The Rod
Bigger water, stronger fish - time to size up a bit in your fly rod selection. Choosing a 7 or 8 wt rod will give you more control when playing smallmouth and better casting efficiency on bigger, wind-resistant flies. Opt for a 2X-4X leader not only for more strength but also increased ability to turn over the bigger flies.
